1. A compound of the formula (1):

is a monovalent anionic bidentate ligand;
Y is oxygen or sulfur;
L2 is a neutral ligand;
R1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, (C1-C20)alkyl, (C2-C20)alkenyl, (C2-C20)alkynyl and (C6-C10)aryl;
R2, R3, R4 and R5 are the same or different and each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, (C1-C16)alkyl, (C1-C16)alkoxy, (C1-C16)perhaloalkyl, (C3-C7)cycloalkyl, (C2-C16)alkenyl, (C6-C14)aryl, (C6-C14)perhaloaryl, (C3-C12)heterocyclyl, —OR6, —NO2, —COOH, —COOR6, —CONR6R7, —SO2NR6R7, —SO2R6, —CHO, —COR6, wherein R6 and R7 are the same or different and each independently selected from the group consisting of (C1-C6)alkyl, (C1-C6)perhaloalkyl, (C6-C14)aryl, (C6-C14)perhaloaryl; or wherein
two or more of R2, R3, R4 and R5 taken together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached to form a substituted or unsubstituted, fused (C4-C8)carbocyclic ring, or a substituted or unsubstituted, fused aromatic ring.
