1. A reader comprising:
a first transceiver configured to, during a current connection event, detect notification messages transmitted from a portable access device to a second transceiver at a phone-as-a-key (PaaK) system of a vehicle, wherein the notification messages are transmitted to establish a communication link between the portable access device and the second transceiver of the PaaK system, wherein the first transceiver is implemented at the reader and the reader is separate from the portable access device and the PaaK system, and wherein the reader is separate from the second transceiver; and
a first control module configured to
monitor the notification messages,
determine at least one parameter based on notification messages, and
indicate the at least one parameter to the PaaK system for permitted access determined by the PaaK system.
