1. An electrode comprising:
a current collector substrate; and
an active material composite layered onto the current collector substrate, wherein the active material composite comprises:
a first layer including a plurality of first particles each comprising a first active material, wherein the first particles are adhered together by a first binder;
a second layer including a plurality of second particles each comprising a second active material, wherein the second particles are adhered together by a second binder; and
an interphase layer adhering the first layer to the second layer, the interphase layer including a non-planar boundary between the first and second layers, such that the first layer and the second layer are interpenetrated, wherein the interphase layer comprises a plurality of fluid passages defined at least in part by the first particles, the second particles, and a plurality of conductive additive particles.
