1. A medication dispensing system for use with initiating and tracking packaging and dispensation of medications to individual patients, the medication dispensing system comprising:
a first automated medication packaging and dispensing machine (ADM) comprising a plurality of canisters, wherein the plurality of canisters include one or more canisters coded for a particular medication, the first ADM configured to:
release at least a first medication associated with a first dispensing request associated with at least a first electronic record, wherein at least one canister of the plurality of canisters is coded for at least the first medication;
generate a first identifier for a first package, wherein the first identifier is specific to the first dispensing request and comprises information associated with at least the first electronic record;
package at least the first medication for a first patient into the first package that includes the first identifier; and
dispense the first package comprising at least the first medication for the first patient;
a processing circuit having at least one processor communicably coupled to at least one memory, the processing circuit communicably coupled to the first ADM via a communication network, the processing circuit configured to:
update at least the first electronic record associated with the first patient to indicate that at least the first medication was packaged and dispensed in accordance with the first dispensing request, wherein updating at least the first electronic record comprises recording a time at least the first medication was dispensed, and recording information of a first individual that initiated the packaging and dispensing of at least the first medication; and
store the update of at least the first electronic record.
