1. A method of using a cell carrier disposed in a flexible substrate and having a first surface and an opposed second surface and a plurality of wells defined by sidewalls formed in the first surface in the form of an array, the cell carrier formed from a rigid material such that the carrier when disposed in one of the wells engages the side walls of the well and is resiliently held in the well, the cell carrier configured to release from the flexible substrate upon mechanical distortion of the flexible substrate, the method of using the cell carrier comprising:
depositing a liquid media carrying cells on the cell carrier so that the cells settle on or adhere to the cell carrier;
releasing the cell carrier by application of gradual mechanical energy to the flexible substrate until the cell carrier is released; and
collecting the cell carrier.
