1. An apparatus configured to be communicatively coupled to an antenna array in a radio access network (RAN), the apparatus comprising:
a baseband unit, comprising one or more processors communicatively coupled with at least one memory; and
a fronthaul transceiver configured to communicatively couple the baseband unit to the antenna array via a fronthaul network;
wherein the baseband unit is configured to:
for a first set of antennas in the antenna array, generate a first Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) matrix from channel state information (CSI);
compute a sparse update matrix corresponding to an update to the first set of antennas;
sum the sparse update matrix with the first MIMO matrix to produce a second MIMO matrix corresponding to a second set of antennas in the antenna array, the second set of antennas being different from the first set of antennas;
make a determination of which of the first MIMO matrix and the second MIMO matrix results in a better CSI, MIMO condition number, peak-to-average-power ratio, or quality metric of spatial subchannels; and
based on the determination, configure the first set of antennas or the second set of antennas to transmit or receive signals in the RAN.
