1. A cable modem operatively connected to an Optical Network Unit (ONU) configured to send upstream signals within a range of frequencies dedicated in the ONU for the upstream signals, the cable modem comprising:
an output configured to send a signal to the (ONU), the ONU having a laser that retransmits the signal; and
a tone generator capable of selectively inserting a tone ahead of the signal so as to activate the laser prior to a time that the ONU receives the signal, the tone outside the range of frequencies dedicated for upstream signals and inserted ahead of the signal.
