1. An electrochemical cell comprising:
a layered electrode comprising:
at least two substantially parallel active material layers, each comprising an active material;
wherein the at least two substantially parallel active material layers are separated by at least one highly ionic conductive layer, the highly ionic conductive layer having an ionic conductivity greater than an ionic conductivity of the active material layers;
wherein at least one of the active material layers comprises a first plurality of ion-conducting channels oriented substantially vertical to the surfaces of the active material layers;
wherein the highly ionic conductive layer comprises carbon;
wherein the electrochemical cell comprises at least two electrodes, at least one electrode being the layered electrode; and
wherein the at least two electrodes are substantially parallel.
