1. A system for replenishing tokens in an electronic transaction card, comprising:
an electronic transaction card having a chip with a card processing unit and card memory, the card memory configured to store an authentication token for use in authenticating the electronic transaction card during a payment transaction;
a card reader having reader circuitry configured to interface with the chip of the electronic transaction card in response to insertion of the electronic transaction card into the card reader, the reader circuitry configured to obtain the authentication token stored in the memory of the electronic transaction card during the payment transaction;
an issuer server communicatively coupled to the card reader to receive the obtained authentication token from the card reader during processing of the payment transaction, the issuer server having a server processing unit and a server memory, the server memory configured to store a plurality of new authentication tokens to facilitate processing of subsequent payment transactions, the server processing unit configured to determine, based on the authentication token received from the payment reader, whether to proceed with authorizing the payment transaction and whether the authentication token is valid for a subsequent payment transaction, the server processing unit configured to provide an issuer script and a new authentication token of the plurality of new authentication tokens to the card reader for the electronic transaction card upon a determination that the authentication token is invalid for the subsequent payment transaction, the issuer script including an instruction for the card processing unit to store the new authentication token in card memory; and
the card reader configured to provide the issuer script and the new authentication token received from the issuer server to the electronic transaction card via a communication path between the card reader and the electronic transaction card while the chip of the electronic transaction card is interfaced with the reader circuitry of the card reader, the card processing unit configured to execute the issuer script, while the electronic transaction card is inserted in the card reader, to store the new authentication token from the issuer server in the card memory for use in the subsequent payment transaction.
