1. A near-eye imaging system comprising:
a light source configured to emit light;
a waveguide including an output coupler;
a scanner configured to direct the light to the output coupler at varying scan angles, wherein the waveguide confines the light to guide the light to the output coupler, and wherein the output coupler has negative optical power and is configured to direct the light to exit the waveguide as expanding illumination light toward an eyebox region; and
a sensor configured to generate a tracking signal in response to returning light incident on the sensor via the scanner and via the output coupler.
