1. A method for producing a vinyl ether polymer containing a hydrocarbon group, comprising the step of polymerizing a monomer selected from the group consisting of the vinyl ethers represented by the following formula (1):

wherein R1 represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 1 to 10 carbons or an alicyclic hydrocarbon group having 3 to 10 carbons,
in the presence of water as a polymerization solvent and an organic azo-based compound as a radical polymerization initiator, under pH of 6 or more,
wherein a basic compound as a pH adjusting agent is added in an amount of 0.001 to 1 mol % based on the total amount of the monomer, and
wherein the weight average molecular weight of the vinyl ether polymer is within the range of 2000 to 50000.
