1. A system for additively manufacturing a three-dimensional object layer-by-layer comprising:
a bed surface;
the object formed upon the bed surface and constructed from a material;
a depositor configured to deposit the material layer-by-layer on the bed surface or a previously deposited layer of the object;
an energy source configured to selectively direct an energized beam at the material to fuse a new layer of the material to a previously formed layer;
a gas surrounding the material through which the energized beam extends;
a control apparatus configured to adjust properties of the gas; and
a melted pool of the material that has a depth that is modified by the control apparatus adjusting the properties of the gas to alter an amount of diffusion the energized beam experiences in order to change a property of the object constructed from the material.
