1. A microelectrode for implantation into soft tissue comprising: an oblong, flexible electrode body of electrically conducting material having a proximal end and a distal end, the flexible electrode body comprising an insulated distal section and an insulated proximal section; wherein the insulated distal and insulated proximal sections are separated by an annular contact section that is not insulated and extends from the insulated distal section to the insulated proximal section, wherein the insulated proximal section includes the proximal end and is covered by a layer of a first insulating material that extends to the proximal end, wherein the distal section of the flexible electrode body comprises the distal end and a blunt distal terminal insulator bulge at the distal end;
wherein the blunt distal terminal insulator bulge has a radial extension substantially greater than that of the insulated proximal section covered by the layer of the first insulating material, wherein the flexible electrode body is covered by the layer of the first insulating material and the blunt distal terminal insulator except for at the annular contact section disposed between the insulated distal section extending from the distal end in proximal direction to the annular contact section, and the insulated proximal section extending from the annular contact section to the proximal end, and wherein the microelectrode can only be implanted in soft tissue with a rigid support.
