1. A method of reducing sodium appetite in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising: inhibiting a plurality of prodynorphin (PDYN)-positive neurons in the pre-locus coeruleus (pre-LCPDYN neurons) of the subject, wherein inhibiting the plurality of pre-LCPDYN neurons of the subject comprises chemogenetically inhibiting the plurality of pre-LCPDYN neurons, thereby reducing sodium ingestion of the subject; and wherein sodium ingestion of the subject is reduced within 50 minutes or less relative to a subject wherein the pre-LCPDYN neurons have not been chemogenetically inhibited, following the chemogenetic inhibition of neurons in the pre-LC that express PDYN.
