1. A patient support apparatus comprising:
a support structure having a patient support surface;
a user module operatively attached to the support structure and including a user interface having a display supported for viewing by a user when adjacent to the support structure;
an indicator panel having a plurality of indicia associated with monitored conditions;
a plurality of first light emitters, with each first light emitter arranged behind one of the plurality of indicia to project light to illuminate the respective indicia, wherein at least one of the plurality of first light emitters is configured to project light in at least a first color and a second color different from the first color; and
a controller coupled to the user interface and the plurality of first light emitters, the controller being configured to:
activate one or more of the plurality of first light emitters to project light in the first color to illuminate one of the plurality of indicia associated with a respective monitored condition,
generate a state indicator on the display corresponding to the respective monitored condition with the state indicator being generated in the first color so that the state indicator matches the first color of light projected by the one or more of the plurality of first light emitters corresponding to the respective monitored condition, and
in response to a change in a state of one of the monitored conditions:
activate the one or more of the plurality of first light emitters to project light in the second color to illuminate the indicium associated with the respective monitored condition, and
generate the state indicator on the display corresponding to the respective monitored condition with the state indicator being generated in the second color so that the state indicator matches the second color of light projected by the one or more of the plurality of first light emitters corresponding to the respective monitored condition.
