1. A medical device for efficient transmission of patient data, the medical device comprising:
at least one sensor configured to acquire electrocardiogram (ECG) data descriptive of a patient condition for a patient;
at least one memory configured to store a plurality of ECG templates;
at least one network interface; and
at least one processor coupled to the at least one sensor, the at least one memory, and the at least one network interface, the at least one processor configured to:
receive current ECG data for the patient from the at least one sensor,
compare the current ECG data to a first reference template of the plurality of ECG templates,
calculate difference data between the current ECG data and the first reference template,
compress the difference data and an identifier of the first reference template to generate compressed data, and
transmit the compressed data via the at least one network interface to a programmable device distinct from the medical device.
