1. A method in a first participant in an ad hoc wireless network, the method comprising:
receiving a first message from a second participant in the ad hoc wireless network indicating that the second participant has appointed itself a routing participant for the ad hoc wireless network based on a self-determined initial routing score;
monitoring behavior of the second participant in the ad hoc wireless network;
identifying behavior of the second participant that is inconsistent with the second participant being a routing participant; and
in response to the identifying, sending a second message to participants of the ad hoc wireless network including a third participant indicating that the second participant is no longer a routing participant.
