1. A method comprising:
recording EMG data over a duration of time with a sensor implanted adjacent to an anterior lingual muscle of a subject, the EMG data characterizing activity of the anterior lingual muscle;
determining phasic activity and tonic activity of the anterior lingual muscle from the EMG data;
determining a sleep stage of the subject during one or more portions of the duration of time based on at least the tonic activity of the anterior lingual muscle;
comparing the determined sleep stage of the one or more portions of the duration of time to a previously determined sleep stage of a prior portion of the duration of time and, based on the previously determined sleep stage, determining whether to modify the determined sleep stage based on a predetermined physiological sequence of sleep stages;
determining one or more parameters of stimulation energy to be delivered to the subject based on the determined sleep stage of the subject; and
delivering the stimulation energy having the one or more parameters to a hypoglossal nerve of the subject.
