1. A method of operating a terminal device in a wireless telecommunications system in which a network infrastructure equipment supports first and second random access procedures for the terminal device, wherein an amount of data for an uplink message of the second random access procedure is greater than an amount of data for a corresponding uplink message of the first random access procedure, and wherein the method comprises:
determining the terminal device should implement a random access procedure;
selecting whether to follow the first random access procedure or the second random access procedure according to whether the terminal device intends to make use of the greater amount of data for the second random access procedure;
determining a common search space to use for receiving a scheduling message indicating radio resources for a random access procedure message transmitted by the network infrastructure equipment according to whether the terminal device has selected to follow the first random access procedure or the second random access procedure; and
monitoring for the scheduling message using the selected common search space.
