1. An apparel item comprising:
a textile material having a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion comprises a surface treatment that biases the first portion in a tensioned state and wherein the second portion is maintained in a tension-free resting state, and
a slit positioned directly adjacent the first portion and between the first portion and the second portion, the slit comprising an opening extending through the textile material, wherein along the slit the first portion extends away from a surface plane of the textile material to form a stand-off structure.
